Spring Smoothies
Another frugal, organic recipe from…

Welcome Spring! Smoothies
What makes spring arrive faster than the clouds can move into rainy, western Washington? A spring smoothie! These smoothies and variations are amazingly easy to make. All you need is a blender and a few items from the Mountain Community Co-op produce share. The secret ingredient? Frozen bananas. They turn any homemade smoothie into a concoction rivaling anything from those fancy juice and smoothie stores.

Banana-Citrus Smoothie
Ingredients
1 banana, frozen
6 strawberries
1 orange, seeded and cut into chunks
1 1/4 cup soy milk, cow’s milk, or water
1 tablespoon protein powder (optional)
1 teaspoon flax oil (optional)
Directions
1. Pre-freeze bananas by peeling and cutting or breaking into 2-inch chunks. Place in zipper freezer bag and freeze a few hours or overnight.
2. Place ingredients in blender, starting with banana chunks at bottom. Add strawberries, orang chunks, and remaining ingredients.
3. Blend until smooth. For a thinner smoothie, add more liquid.
Variations: You can add or subtract any fruit in the same proportions. Favorites include pineapple chunks, mango, papaya. Our family often adds the grated organic coconut available at the co-op.
