Seed SelectionThis is a featured page

by Irene Bensinger who did all this seed source investigating in Spring 2008.

Remember, just because a seed supplier has signed the Safe Seed
Pledge, it does NOT mean that they don't carry Seminis/Peto/Monsanto
seeds. All it means is that they will not knowingly sell GMO seeds.

But, for me, the issue goes far beyond avoiding GMO seeds. I don't
want one penny of my seed purchases to fall into the coffers of a
company that is bent on monopolizing the world's food seed supply.

These companies have replied that they do NOT carry seeds from Seminis
or Peto or American Seeds, Inc. (All three seed suppliers are owned by
Monsanto.) There are other seed sellers that do not carry
Monsanto-owned seeds, but these are the ones I contacted.

Abundant Life
Natural Gardening Company
Tomato Fest
Cook's Garden
Heirloom Seeds
Bountiful Gardens
Fedco
Victory
Southern Exposure
Stellar (very small seed growers in B.C.)
Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds
Seeds of Change
Seed Savers Exchange
Select Seeds
Peters Seed Company
High Mowing Organic Seeds

Rodale's website in 2005 had this list of Seminis/Monsanto seeds:

http://newfarm.rodaleinstitute.org/features/2005/0205/seminisbuy/index.shtml

And the following companies replied that they DO carry Seminis seeds,
in some cases only a handful of varieties, other substantial amounts.

IF you order from these companies be sure to stress in your order that
you definitely do not want any seeds that originate from Seminis. Seed
suppliers need to hear from their customers that Seminis/Monsanto
seeds are unacceptable.

Territorial

Kitazawa

Totally Tomato

Burpees

Jung

Renee's Garden

Shumway

Johnny's (They sent me a list of about 50 varieties that they get from Seminis
and/or Peto. It broke my heart to recycle my Johnny's catalog unread.)

Stokes

Thompson & Morgan

Harris Seeds

Gurneys

Hume Seeds

Pinetree

Nichols

Seminis openly lists some, but certainly not all, of the companies who
carry their seeds on their website

Bottom line: If you wish to avoid Monsanto-owned seeds, write to the
companies you plan to order seeds from and ask them specifically: Do
any of the seeds you sell originate from Seminis or Petco? The issue
is NOT whether or not the seeds are genetically modified; the issue is
where the seeds originate. Then spend your seed dollars accordingly.
